An independent community pharmacy was seeking additional working capital to support ongoing stock purchases and improve day-to-day cash flow. Despite generating a reliable income from NHS prescriptions, the timing gap between purchasing stock and receiving NHS payments created cash flow pressures that limited the business's ability to operate and grow efficiently.
The client required a flexible facility that would:
Provide immediate access to working capital
Support pharmacy stock purchases
Work alongside the pharmacy’s NHS income cycle
Allow the business to draw funds when required
Avoid charges on any undrawn portion of the facility
A traditional business loan was not considered the most appropriate structure, as the client required a revolving working-capital solution rather than a fixed lump-sum loan with set monthly capital repayments.
Following a review of the client’s requirements, AWS Private Finance approached Rx Bridge, a specialist provider of pharmacy working-capital facilities.
We secured indicative terms for a £100,000 FP34 stock and working-capital facility for the pharmacy.
The facility was structured around the pharmacy’s NHS income, with security provided through an assignment of NHS receipts. This created a funding solution specifically aligned with the way the pharmacy receives and manages its income.
Indicative facility terms
Facility limit: £100,000
Purpose: Pharmacy stock and working capital
Minimum term: 12 months
Notice period: Three months
Discount rate: 1.60% per 30 days of the average amount drawn
Arrangement fee: 3%
Non-utilisation fee: 0%
Security: Assignment of NHS receipts
The absence of a non-utilisation fee was particularly useful, as the client would not be charged interest simply for having access to the full facility. The funding cost would instead be linked to the amount actually drawn.
The proposed facility provided the pharmacy with access to up to £100,000 of additional liquidity, helping it manage the timing difference between paying suppliers and receiving NHS income.
The structure gave the client greater flexibility to:
Purchase stock without placing unnecessary pressure on existing cash reserves
Meet supplier payments more comfortably
Manage short-term fluctuations in working capital
Continue investing in the day-to-day operation of the pharmacy
Draw and repay funds in line with the needs of the business
Pharmacy funding often requires a specialist understanding of NHS payment cycles, stock purchasing and the operational pressures experienced by independent pharmacy owners.
By presenting the proposal to a lender that specialises in the sector, we were able to identify a facility that was more closely aligned with the client’s working-capital requirements than a standard commercial loan.
